Untitled (imprint) is an ongoing series by Arjinjonathan Arjinkit. Arjinkit has been working across various mediums including: painting, print, photomontage, installation. However, his recent focus has been primarily on painting. In the new body of work, Untitled (imprint), ‘imprint’ refers to the pattern appear on the surface of the work, and also refers the process in creating this body of work. The print-like circle marks expand orderly throughout the canvas. The repetitive and systematic marks along with the peculiar hue trigger the idea that the work could have generated by mechanical execution rather than manual means. Yet, upon closely inspection, viewer can see the trace of painterly elements – layered paints, the movement of the paint, texture, and viewer can indicate that the work has created by manual process. Material, process and color has always been areas of Arjinkit core practice. In his painting, he often employs industrial paint, commercial paint and other industrial material in his painting process. His signature bright, vibrant and vivid color is his visual aspect of today’s society that in line with the current global landscape. Arjinkit refers to his color as ‘color of today’s everyday life’. His palette and his choice of material support each other ideology. Through his art practice, Arjinkit perhaps seek a mean of compromising – to compromise with the extreme development and backwardness of the society, to compromise with the technological advancement and conventional means, to compromise with the preciseness and crafty element, to compromise the high art and mass culture.
